Mystery Bullet Lodged In Gardener's Brain
A dramatic image of a bullet lodged in a man's brain has been released as police try to find out how he was wounded.
Peter Hesford, 61, collapsed while gardening at his home in the Chorlton area of Manchester - but he has no memory of what happened to him.
Greater Manchester Police told Sky News Online that Mr Hesford's wife Marie had found him on the ground on April 19 - he was conscious but unable to speak.
A spokesman added: "Initially, it was thought he had suffered a stroke."
When Mr Hesford got to hospital, doctors discovered he had an object lodged in his head and they alerted police.
Ballistics experts who examined an x-ray concluded that the object had entered Mr Hesford's head through his eye
At first they could not be sure that it was a bullet. But a CT scan has since confirmed fears the victim was shot.
A police spokeswoman said: "The bullet is still in Mr Hesford's head. There has been an attempt to remove it surgically but they (doctors) were not able to because of its position."
She said it was not yet known whether the bullet would have to remain in the victim's brain, adding: "'He is a very poorly man,' his family have said."
Mr Hesford remains in a stable condition in Wythenshawe Hospital.
Detective Chief Inspector Steve Eckersley, of West Didsbury CID, said: "This man has obviously suffered a really serious injury and we've made many inquiries but we have not yet found out how he was hurt."
